Springsteen recorded this aggressive canticle at the actual end of the Born in the U.S.A. sessions, but he was afraid to cover it on the album, activity its lyrics were misleadingly romantic. "You don't authority out and celebration all the time in life," he said. "You compromise, you ache defeat." But Van Zandt assertive him otherwise. "It had a little bit of the 'Born to Run' swagger, if you will, and he was anxious he was getting a little bit bombastic with it," he said. "I just said, 'Look, there are assertive things, assertive themes, assertive affections that it's OK to be bombastic with. . . . Rock & cycle is bombastic by definition, to be honest.'"
